Why is sustainable safety like a marshmallow shooter?
A marshmallow shooter can be easily made from PVC fittings and a few short lengths of PVC pipe. It safely shoots mini marshmallows as much as 60 feet. One of the commercial versions received the Creative Child magazine 2004 Seal of Excellence.
Sustainable safety is like a marshmallow shosoter because...
- Safety is part of the product design. The parts are safe but of course do not remove all the risks.
- If does not cost much to make.
- All aspects are open source knowledge. Nothing is proprietary.
- It is easy to duplicate.
- It is easy to learn.
- The parts are easy to replace as they are not glued together.
- It is user friendly.
- It tolerates a departure from ideal performance.
All of these characteristics are also true of sustainable safety. Much of both traditional safety and behavioral safety have become incredibley complex and costly. Neither method works well in an environment of high turnover and low employee motivation. Neither of those methods is cost effective in the new global economy.
Many firms that use traditional safety and behavioral safety are finding that the cost is becoming prohibitive. Some firms have reacted and have fired their CSPs and are giving packages to safety engineers. Other companies resist formal safety engineers. Other companies resist formal safety programs because somehow they have survived many years with no incidents. One company in Wyoming reported that they never had any incidents until they were forced into a formal safety program. Somewhere in the middle is something that works. Your safety council is aiming to bring you knowledge of how sustainable safety can be implemented.
The Wyoming-Montana Safety Council (WMSC) was established as a non-profit Corporation to reduce human and economic loss by educating Wyoming and Montana businesses and individuals about safety and health. WMSC is the Wyoming and Montana chapter of the National Safety Council and its revenues are derived primarily from program registration fees and membership dues. WMSC offers safety programs for both students and instructors. Some of the courses and materials offered by the Wyoming-Montana Safety Council include:
